Intro to 3D Printing

Intro to 3D PrintingLearn 3D printing fundamentals and 3D print a Fidget Spinner.

Participants will 3D print and assemble a Fidget Spinner. This class will focus on the fundamentals of 3D printing. Using Cura, students will learn to slice a 3D design, adjust printing parameters, start a 3D print and troubleshoot common problems. Members will be able to use the 3d printers after taking this class.

Class Length: 1 hour
Prerequisites: None (Intro to 3D design is helpful)

Instructor Bio: Ben Holmgren is a Plastics and Composites Engineering graduate of Western Washington University. He has been working with the Bellingham Makerspace for 6 years teaching 3D printing, 3D design, and a class to build your own 3D Printer.

Make your own Space Saber

Make your own Space SaberBuild your own Space Saber! Learn electronics, decorate your hilt, build a blade. Take home LED Saber prop

Make your very own Space Saber! Sabers can be made specifically for sparring, for juggling and flow, and just for looking AMAZING! These Space Sabers are fun, durable, and provide hours of entertainment.

You will learn to solder your electronics, add the lights of your choice, controllers and batteries. Pick from our assortment of 3D printed parts to make it look like YOUR saber. Build your own blade, cut to your desired length. Once you've made the basics, your saber can be upgraded to include sound, color changing blades, and even animations (additional charges may apply).

Design and build your own saber, and at the end of the class take it home with you! All parts and materials are included in the class cost. Email Anthony Roselli to schedule the class at another time.

Instructor Bio: Anthony Roselli has been a saber enthusiast for many years. After learning about flow arts and contact fencing with sabers, he helped form the Bellingham Order of the Saber in 2018. In 2019 he began working on making his own sabers at the Bellingham Makerspace and is now Bellingham's resident expert in saber construction

Intro to CNC Routers

Intro to CNCA hands on introduction to computer controlled routers. Design, engrave and cut your own or acrylic coaster.

Designing and making custom coasters is a quick and easy way to cover numerous topics that apply to any CNC project. The class will use Easel to design coasters and then engrave and cut them using the Makerspace X-Carve. Topics to be covered include:
  • Basic intro to CNC (x/y/z axis, controllers. drivers, steppers, etc.)
  • Using the Easel software (design tools/apps, origin/home, paths, preview, etc)
  • Router bit selection (straight, spiral, compression and V-bits)
  • Using hold down clamps, waste boards and the dust collector
  • Making more complex wood and acrylic coasters/projects
Participants are encouraged to register at Inventables and watch the Learn Easel in 4 Minutes video. Makerspace members can use the X-Carve for personal projects after taking this class.CNC

Intro to CNC Sign Making

Intro to CNC Sign MakingA hands-on introduction to using the CNC wood carving machine to make signs.

Welcome to the world of CNC! This is a hands-on introduction to CNC using Bellingham Makerspace's X-Carve machine. You will learn to use design software, hands-on use of the CNC and also carve a small project that you design.

What to bring with you to class: Laptop if you have one (not required). You will be doing software design so if you normally use a mouse to move your cursor, bring it with you. Class starts promptly at 5pm. You should arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to get settled in, oriented, and prepared for class.

Class Length: 1-1/2 hours

Your CNC Router Project

X-Carve CNC Project WorkshopA one-on-one project workshop to help you turn your design into a finished project. Prerequisites: Intro to CNC Routers and project info.

For those who have taken Intro to CNC Routers and would like help preparing and cutting/engraving a project. Possibilities include learning to use advanced Easel features and functions, importing 2D CAD (dxf) or vector (svg) drawings, advanced X-Carve setups involving fixtures for repetitive cuts, joint making, two sided machining, router templates, longer than workspace machining, vacuum fixtures, etc.

To insure that the instructor can help with your project, please email him (davelers@gmail.com) some information about your idea/project (drawings appreciated) before registering. If the scheduled day/time is not convenient, please include your availability. Preferred scheduling is Wednesday - Monday starting at 4-6pm.

Intro to Vector Graphics

Vector Graphics 101Learn how to make vector graphic files that can be used to make stuff on the Makerspace laser, vinyl cutter and CNC router.

To effectively use the laser cutter or vinyl cutter, you need a good vector graphic (file types SVG, AI and EPS). Instructor Jason Davies shows you how to use the free and open-source program Inkscape to make, edit and trace your own vector graphics.

Please bring your own laptop and a mouse to class, and ensure that you have downloaded Inkscape onto it before the class. If you can't bring a laptop, let the instructor know ahead of time so we can arrange to bring over a makerspace computer for you to use.

Intro to the Woodshop

Woodshop 101An introduction to the Makerspace woodshop tools and standards. Process a board and make a chamfered take home project.

The easiest way to get acquainted with the Makerspace Woodshop Standards and machines is with hands on board processing. While topics like reading grain direction will be touched upon, the focus is how to safely use the Makerspace woodworking machines. The class is for both experienced woodworkers and those new to woodworking.

Use the Makerspace machines to cut, surface, plane, square and chamfer a piece of 2x6 lumber. Take home a chamfered sign board, shelf, plaque, etc.. Makerspace members can use the woodshop for personal projects after taking this class.

Intro to the Vinyl Cutter

Intro to the Vinyl CutterLearn how to use the Makerspace Vinyl Cutter. Each participant will make, cut, prepare and stick their own laptop/phone sticker!

Learn to use the Bellingham Makerspace's vinyl cutter to make wall art, stickers, banners, signs and more! Participants will learn the basics of vector design, how to cut, prepare and stick the vinyl efficiently to any non-porous surface. Each participant will make, cut, prepare and stick their own laptop/phone sticker! Makerspace members can use the Vinyl Cutter for personal projects after taking this class.

Intro to the Laser

Intro to the LaserLearn how to safely operate the Makerspace laser. Each student will cut and engrave their own acrylic keychain.

The Bellingham Makerspace's Laser Cutter is extremely powerful, extremely versatile and extremely large. Members can use it to cut lots of flat materials (wood, plywood, acrylic plastics, leather) and engrave dozens of others (glass, ceramic, marble). This 1 Hour class teaches you how to safely operate the laser, what materials are recommended and rules and regulations for doing it all safely. Each student will cut and engrave their own acrylic keychain. Makerspace members can use the Laser for personal projects after taking this class.
